Facebook is the second most visited site on the internet behind Google. And most people don’t even see the Google search engine as a website.

So, advertising on Facebook already puts you in front of a lot of eyeballs, but the strength of Facebook advertising is more than that. We think Facebook targets ads better than, say, Google AdWords. You can send your ads to a specific demographic based on age, sex, location, interests, keywords, etc. These targeted ads can have a higher click-through rate than just sending your ad all over the internet.

Facebook itself produces a guide to help you choose the right ads to place, but it can be overwhelming, and it does not tell you whether your company would benefit more from ads in the news feed or in the right column. So, which ones should you use?

The answer, of course, is “it depends.” Mobile news feed ads benefit companies that get a lot of walk-in, last-minute traffic such as restaurants. If your customers are looking for you mostly using their phone, then you need to focus on things which are seen on their phone, which means mobile news feed and Instagram. If, on the other hand, your customers tend to be at home when they need your services, you might get a better reaction from desktop news feed. Right column ads tend to be less in a person’s face – and younger audiences are more likely to react to news feed ads as obnoxious intrusions and may be more inclined to go for the more discreet column ads.

All of these can grow your business if leveraged properly. Make sure to guide people to an active Facebook page with information about your business. Businesses are 80% more likely to gain business if a prospective customer goes to an active Facebook page than one that hasn’t had a post in months.
