Hashtags for Business Owners
Hashtags have definitely claimed their space in our digital lives and nowadays serve as a powerful tool for both individuals and companies. In this article, we’ll dive into a few hashtags basics for business owners.
What is a Hashtag?
Hashtags are clickable words or unspaced phrases that follow an “#” (number/pound sign), which we find online (particularly on social media platforms). When they’re clicked on, they direct users to a feed of posts that include that hashtag, and this allows people to find content about topics they’re interested in (e.g. #BusinessTip, #DisneyParks, #NewYearsEve2020, etc…).
Why Should You Use Hashtags?
Hashtags are a great way to increase the visibility of your business posts on social media, as people that are not yet following you can easily find you when they search for specific hashtags. They can also increase the engagement and conversations in your posts (often, just by adding a fun or relatable hashtag, viewers get inspired to comment or like our posts). For businesses that create branded hashtags to promote user-generated content, hashtags are an awesome way to organize and find those user-generated posts later on. Hashtags are also very useful when used throughout events, as participants can easily share and tag their event photos and insights on their own social media posts, and after the event is finished all participants can easily find a whole array of content related to that event.
Where Can You Use Hashtags?
Hashtags are used on all main social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Tik Tok, and Linkedin.
How Many Hashtags Can You Use on Each Platform?
The number of hashtags that you can use on your social media posts varies according to the platform you’re using, but you should always stay open to experiment and testing with different numbers, as what works for your specific audience might be different than what works for others.
Facebook – This social platform has only recently started prompting users to use hashtags to ‘increase their posts’ visibility. Most experts recommend using 1 or 2 hashtags.
Twitter – 1 or 2 hashtags can double your engagement rates, but more than that can actually decrease it.
Instagram – Hashtags are heavily used on this platform. You can use up to 30 hashtags on each post, but some studies have shown that the ideal number is between 9-11 hashtags.
YouTube – You’re allowed to use up to 15 hashtags on each video. While there isn’t any official statement from this platform regarding how effective hashtags are to increase video views, most experts believe that they do help.
Pinterest – It’s possible to add up to 20 hashtags on each pin description, but most experts agree that it’s best to use only a few hashtags.
Tik Tok – Use between 4 to 5 hashtags to increase the engagement on your posts.
Linkedin – There’s no official guideline regarding the number of hashtags that you can use, but most experts believe you should add up to 5 hashtags on each post.
Regardless of which platform you’re using, you should always use hashtags that are related to the content of the posts.
How Can You Find The Most Effective Hashtags?
One of the best ways to find effective hashtags if to take a look at what your competitors are using. You should also search for hashtags that are popular in your business niche. Ideally, you should always use a mix of highly generic, more popular hashtags with more specific hashtags that are less commonly used. You can also create your own branded hashtag, or a specific hashtag for your business events or contests (e.g. #IceBucketChallenge, #LikeAGirl, #NewYorkCityMarathon, etc.). If your post is related to a current trend or date, then you can search for related, trending hashtags that you can use (e.g. #ChristmasTime, #MeTooMovement, #AloneTogether, etc.).
There are also plenty of tools available for finding popular hashtags, such as All Hashtag, Ritetag, Hashtagify, DisplayPurposes, and Photerloo Instagram Hashtag and Keyword Generator. These tools often allow you to look into the popularity of each hashtag and will help you find several new related hashtags.
Hashtags are powerful tools that can help businesses and individuals improve their social media game big time. With the right strategy and the right tools, it’s easier to take advantage of them, but if you’re lacking the time to learn how to use them effectively, we can help you.
